On the Rialto Photos: The Red Marquee Is Back at Broadway's Majestic Theatre

Painted black for all 35 years of The Phantom of the Opera's historic run, the iconic marquee has now been restored to its former glory.

When The Phantom of the Opera played its final performance last year after a historic 35-year run, we knew Broadway would never truly be the same. But in some ways, the show's departure has let us return to the past in a way that a not-small percentage of theatre fans may have never even been alive to see.

With the luxury of a theatre that is without a tenant for the first time since the '80s, The Shubert Organization has been busy restoring the historic theatre, first opened in 1927. We haven't gotten a first look at the insides just yet, but we got an unexpected look at what's to come with the re-hanging of the theatre's marquee last week. The iconic, lighted fixture went back up on the theatre's facade April 25—but it hadn't been merely dusted off.

The Shuberts have restored the marquee's vibrant red color, painted black (along with much of the venue's interior) for the entirety of the gothic musical's long run. If you happen to find yourself on West 44th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue any time soon, make sure to get an in-person look.

The theatre's next show has not yet been announced. Scroll for more images of the new (old) Majestic.
