Industry News Matt Cox Play Witches!? In Salem?! Now Licensable Via Uproar Theatrics

The playwright behind Puffs offers his "darkly comedic, (mostly) historically accurate" take on the Salem Witch Trials.

Matt Cox (Puffs)'s Witches!? In Salem?! has been acquired by Uproar Theatrics for licensing, and is now available in both full-length and high school editions.

The work, a parody of the Salem Witch Trials and Arthur Miller's The Crucible, made its premiere earlier this year Off-Broadway at HERE Arts Center.

“Matt has a unique gift for blending humor and heart in stories where we least expect to find them," says Uproar Theatrics co-founder Nathan Sheffield in a statement. "Witches!? In Salem?! is a fresh and clever take on an all-too-familiar story. We know Matt’s work resonates with theatre communities around the world, and we are excited to partner with him in sharing his newest comedy."

The high school edition of the play will premiere with a staged reading at this year's International Thespian Festival in June. Attending thespian troupes are encouraged to submit applications to debut the comedy by May 20. One selected troupe will workshop the piece with Cox prior to the performance, which will feature Cox himself reading stage directions. To submit, visit UproarTheatrics.com.

Launched in 2021, Uproar Theatrics aims to transform how regional, school, stock, and amateur groups license plays and musicals by operating as an all-digital theatrical licensing company. The all-digital materials model for licensing eliminates shipping costs and additional fees associated with damaged and lost rentals. Each theatre instead receives customized, watermarked PDFs for production members. Since materials are digital, writers can make updates and changes to works and have them be immediately available to users. Other titles in the Uproar catalogue include Analog & Vinyl; Being Earnest; Abortion Road Trip; He Did It; Ranked, a Musical; and The Unfortunates.
