Daniel Aukin has won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play at the 77th Annual Tony Awards, held at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater June 16. Aukin won for his work in Stereophonic. This is his first Tony nomination and first win.
Stereophonic, which just got extended to January 5, 2025 at the Golden Theatre, follows a '70s rock band as they record their sophomore album. It made history as the most Tony-nominated play ever, with 13 nods. Aukin's previous Broadway credit is Fool For Love, though he's well-known Off-Broadway and regionally (having previously won three Obie Awards).

The other nominees for Best Direction of a Play were Anne Kauffman (Mary Jane), Kenny Leon (Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch), Lila Neugebauer (Appropriate), and Whitney White (Jaja's African Hair Braiding).
