Alicia Keys musical Hell's Kitchen had a great week at the box office, besting the week prior by more than $160K and earning itself a debut spot within the top five highest grossers on the Main Stem. Only Hamilton, Wicked, and The Lion King brought in higher totals. The musical, playing the Shubert, is turning out to be the best performing of this season's new musicals, even having missed out on the much coveted Best Musical title at this year's Tony Awards. Regular top earner Cabaret filled the fifth spot.
But Tony Awards help, too. Best Musical winner The Outsiders ranked seventh among the top 10 highest earners last week, breaking the house record at the Bernard B. Jacobs for the fourth week in a row. That show may be on its way to giving Hell's Kitchen a run for its money—only time will tell.
Cumulatively, grosses fell almost 7% over the 26 currently running shows, dropping from $31.9 million the week prior to $29.8 million last week. But as is often the way, that was to be expected. We had one less show last week, and it was a doozy: the Tony-winning revival of Merrily We Roll Along. The production was a top grosser throughout its run, but particularly in its last few weeks after winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. That revival's closing likely accounts for that entire drop and then some, a testament to how much of a success the production was.
With Merrily off the boards, Cabaret has taken its title of the top average ticket price on Broadway at $197.23. Over all currently running shows, 242,578 people saw a show last week and paid an average of $123.04, which is not too shabby. That translated to 93.4% of available seats being filled, which means Broadway is enjoying a busy summer indeed.
