Fortunes rose on Broadway last week, specifically by almost 7% from the week prior, and an impressive 16% from this week last year. That came out to $36 million cumulatively over the 35 currently-running shows, and with 89% of seats filled.
This is the last week of data we will have in hand before this weekend's all-important Tony Awards (though not the last data we'll get from performances held before the ceremony—that will come next week).
Box-office success isn't always a harbinger of a winning Tony night, but it appears that musical revivals—specifically Cabaret and Merrily We Roll Along—are the undisputed champs in terms of weekly take. With current Tony nominee and former Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe back from his vacation, both shows were in the top five as usual, only beaten by long-running stalwarts The Lion King, Wicked, and Hamilton.
As for non-revivals, Hell's Kitchen was not able to hold on to its top 5 spot last week, but it was still the highest-grossing new musical, followed by The Great Gatsby, The Outsiders, and Back to the Future. On the play front, the recently recouped An Enemy of the People is the consistent top grosser, followed by Lincoln Center's Steve Carrell-led Uncle Vanya and Stereophonic.
That Uncle Vanya got a noticeable uptick last week, with grosses raising by more than a quarter-million. Seats were also filled 97%, an impressive increase from 74% the week before. Ironically, the revival is not nominated for Best Revival of a Play at this year's Tonys. Its sole nod went to William Jackson Harper, for his leading performance as Astrov.
