The mission of Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) is to entertain, enrich and expand a global community for jazz through performance, education, and advocacy. From college students to young stars, from working professionals to celebrated masters, we present quality jazz for an ever-increasing audience in an unprecedented range of activities and a variety of venues. JALC has created a dynamic platform where our key constituents – jazz artists (beginner to grizzled veteran), fans (casual listeners to advanced scholars), educators (local band leaders to leading artist-educators) and advocates (local community advocates to important national promoters) – can meet, engage, learn, and work toward common objectives.

The Assistant Director, Research and Strategy is responsible for identifying prospects as well as synthesizing, managing, and distributing research profiles and reports on prospects and donors to the Development team, senior staff, and committees of the Board of Trustees. They work alongside the Director, Development Operations to track broader trends in culture, business, and fundraising relevant to Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC). The Assistant Director works directly with fundraising officers across individual, foundation, corporate, and government giving areas to manage portfolios and set goals and priorities.

The successful candidate will have an expansive and entrepreneurial approach around identifying and verifying accurate research and keeping meticulous records.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies prospects, analyzes wealth and giving capacity, and prepares and presents various research reports (financial, biographical, etc.) on individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies to be used by the Development Department and other JALC staff.
  • Offers strategic recommendations for engagement based on research findings.
  • Conducts research on prospects while utilizing web-based research tools (iWave, Wealth-X, WealthEngine, Candid/Foundation Directory, NOZA, SEC and FEC filings, Hoovers, MarketWatch, Forbes, Bloomberg Businessweek, etc.), as well as JALC’s Tessitura donor database, to collect and analyze information.
  • Maintains and analyzes prospective and upgraded donor data and develops current and prospective donor lists and data.
  • Synthesizes research into various documents for use in the fundraising process, including in-depth prospect and donor profiles, bios, lists, and meeting briefings to help determine appropriate solicitation ranges. Assists Individual and Institutional Giving teams in portfolio review and prioritization and qualification of new prospects.
  • Stays abreast of current local, national, and global events across several fields.
  • Working alongside the Development Operations team, assists in maintaining the integrity of records in donor database.
  • Works with the VP, Development to provide the Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee with necessary profiles and documents and helps facilitate Board pipeline.
  • May supervise staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, and a minimum of 4-6 years in not-for-profit research experience, including portfolio management.
  • Strong knowledge of research and wealth screening tools, and experience with database applications for prospect identification.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in creating cogent, organized, readable, and comprehensive donor profiles.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly evaluate and concisely synthesize large amounts of information.
  • Demonstrated adaptability and ability to manage multiple simultaneous requests and prioritize those requests to meet deadlines through excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of all basic Microsoft Office applications. Willingness to work occasional nights and weekends as required.

This role will be in office 5 days a week.

SALARY

$95,000.00 – $105,000.00 per year
