A new documentary Slave Play. Not a Movie. A Play begins streaming on Max June 20. The film premiered at the 23rd annual Tribeca Film Festival June 10.
The documentary follows playwright Jeremy O. Harris' journey writing and workshopping Slave Play, which opened on Broadway in 2019. Harris also directs the film, which features a cast of actors from New York's William Esper Studio.
Slave Play debuted Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop with Robert O'Hara directing, before transferring to Broadway, where performances began September 10, 2019 and continued through January 19, 2020. The work received an encore run on Broadway November 23, 2021 to January 23, 2022.
The original Broadway cast featured Tony Award winner Joaquina Kalukango as Kaneisha, Ato Blankson-Wood as Gary, James Cusati-Moyer as Dustin, Sullivan Jones as Phillip, Chalia La Tour as Teá, Irene Sofia Lucio as Patricia, Annie McNamara as Alana, and Paul Alexander Nolan as Jim.
The production received 12 Tony nominations including Best Play, breaking the record for most nominations by any non-musical play at the time. Slave Play is currently headed for a U.K. premiere in the West End beginning June 29, with O'Hara again directing.
