Shaina Taub Wins Best Book of a Musical for Suffs at the 2024 Tony Awards

Shaina Taub was named the winner of the 2024 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical June 16 at The 77th Annual Tony Awards at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theatre.

Taub took the prize for her work penning the book of Broadway’s Suffs, a musical about the American suffragists and forgotten women who fought for the right to vote. Taub also wrote the music and lyrics for the musical.

In her acceptance speech, Taub started with, "I grew up in Vermont watching the Tonys every year with my mom on TV and dreaming of being a part of this magical community. Thank you for letting me be a part of it." Then after thanking her mom and her collaborators on Suffs, Taub ended her speech with a call to action: "If you are inspired by the story of Suffs, please make sure you and everyone you know have registered to vote and vote, vote, vote!"

Others who were nominated in the category were Kristoffer Diaz for Hell’s Kitchen, Bekah Brunstetter for The Notebook, Adam Rapp with Justin Levine for The Outsiders, and Rick Elice for Water for Elephants.

Suffs is Taub’s first Broadway credit. In addition to winning the Tony for Best Book, she is also nominated the Tony for Best Original Score. Taub also performed in her musical’s Off-Broadway premiere at The Public Theater in 2022. Additionally, she has worked on and performed in other Off-Broadway productions, including The Public Theater’s Twelfth Night (both the 2016 and 2018 productions) and As You Like It, the 2013 production of Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, and the New York Theatre Workshop production of Hadestown. Alongside EGOT winner Elton John, Taub also wrote the lyrics for the musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada, which will make its West End debut this fall.
